MEET THE CANDIDATES
This year, with the large number of Nassau County and Town of Oyster Bay positions up for election, we will partner with the NorthWest Civic and Hicksville Community Council to host a series of Town Hall meetings to offer an opportunity for all candidates to express their views and answer questions from the Hicksville community. Invitations were sent to candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties for all positions up for election. Not all candidates may be able to attend, due to prior commitments.
The Hicksville Gardens Civic Association DOES NOT endorse any candidate. As a local civic association, we present candidates with a forum to share their ideas and to answer questions. The statements made by the candidates at these forums are the candidates’ own and are not an endorsement by the Hicksville Gardens Civic Association. |
ALL meetings will be held at the Hicksville Community Center, 28 Carl St., and start at 7pm.
We urge everyone to attend as many of these meetings as possible.

Voting is a privilege that comes with a responsibility to be familiar with the candidates’ positions on issues that affect us all. Information on the candidates is readily available on the internet, and we encourage everyone to seek out this information to be an informed electorate. Hicksville is the most populous hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, as well as one of the most populous in Nassau County. With development projects underway and planned for our community and nearby, it is important to show the candidates that we care what is going on in this place we all call home.

Cleaning American Drive-In Cleaners
Last week, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has issued a Record of Decision (ROD) for the American Drive-In Cleaners Site, which describes the remedy selected to address contamination associated with the site.
Contaminants investigated include volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These solvents were a concern because of the site’s history as a dry cleaning facility.
Major elements of the selected remedy include:
1. A soil vapor extraction system: This system will extract VOCs from the subsurface soil. The air removed will be treated as needed before being discharged to the atmosphere.
2. Cover system: A site cover currently exists and will be maintained to allow for commercial use of the site.
3. Building slab maintenance: This maintenance will be performed to prevent vapor intrusion. Annual inspections will be performed to ensure the effectiveness of the maintenance.
4. Groundwater monitoring: A program of monitoring will be carried out to address groundwater contamination. It is anticipated that within a reasonable time period contamination will decrease.
5. Site Management Plan: will include provisions to monitor for the continued effectiveness of the remedy.
The full ROD may be found on the NYSDEC website. Copies of the ROD are also available for review at the Hicksville Public Library.
For more info, you may contact the NYSDEC Project Manager: Melissa Sweet, 518-402-9620, email:melissa.sweet@dec.ny.gov
HGCA Planting Project
On May 18, 2011 Beautification Committee Chairman Frank Guarasci and members of his “Green Team”, Phil Heckler and Nick Mirro, purchased nearly $300 worth of new bushes and planted them on the So. Broadway median across from Miyako Hibachi & Sushi Restaurant.
Great Job “Green Team”!
