Loitering Problem at
Hicksville Curves
Hi,

My name is Joan Bender & I am one of the owners of the Hicksville Curves located at 319 Jerusalem Avenue.

We have had so many problems with kids hanging out on our property.  This is almost a daily problem.  I have
witnessed & have received MANY complaints from my members.
I called the 8th precinct back on 4/27/09 & I was referred to POP where I left a message regarding our problem.
The problem seemed to be getting better, but it has now taken a turn for the worst.

I do the best I can in maintaining my property, however it is hard to keep up when there is constant parties in our
parking lot.  They leave numerous beer bottles & trash; plus they urinate on the fence & down my back basement
stairs.  The smell is horid & I can not imagine what it's going to be like when the temperature hits the 90's.  Some of
these groups I approach and some I'm scared to because I'm received with comments like "yo, it's public property".
Plus, there is 5 of them & 1 of me, so I feel threatened.

Members have seen them in broad daylight urinating against the fence, drinking in their cars & passing "something
small & white" from car to car.  They are not patrons of my club and they are not respectful of the property or my
members.  Some of my members have expressed fear regarding these kids.

As for the evening hours, my landlord fixed the lighting on the southside of the building, so that is helpful for my
members & employees to feel safer at night.   I'm in the process of asking them to get the power turned back on on
the northside of the building too, so that those lights may be turned on as well.

My members & neighbors have been instrumental in keeping track of who comes in our lot.  There are 2 groups that
we know come during the day.
(1) Nissan Altima - tan car, plate # xxxxxxx - this group is the one we find most threatening.
(2) Honda Civic - silver car, plate # xxxxxxx - this group keeps to themself but they sit and drink in the car from
anywhere from 11AM-12:30pm.  One of them is 21 & buys his beer at the gas station next store.

Please assist us in fixing this problem.  I have a small business & I work very hard.  My members, my neighbors and
I need support so that we can feel safe again whether it's at  the gym, at home or at work.

Thank you for you attention to this matter.  Please call me with any questions you might have.

Kindest Regards,

Joan Bender

Hi,

We have been diligently recording what goes on in our parking lot for many months and I'm happy to report that
nothing substantial has taken place since 6/17/09!

We are so pleased with each of your involvement in addressing this problem.  We were at our wit's end when we first
contacted you and we are so appreciative that our neighbors, HGVA, the Aux police and the 8th precinct took our
concerns seriously. You all acted very quickly in handling this situation.  You have helped us to feel safe again at
our Curves club and for that we thank you!

Have an enjoyable holiday weekend and thanks again for all your efforts.

Sincerely,

Joan Bender and Leicia Savinetti
